Depois de um número recorde de envios de filmes em língua estrangeira, agora é a vez dos documentários de Longa-Metragem.
São 170 documentários submetidos na categorias, maior número na história. No entanto, vários dos filmes ainda não tiveram o requerido lançamento em Los Angeles e Nova York para se qualificarem. Os filmes enviados devem completar os requerimentos de lançamento no cinema e acatar com todas as outras regras de qualificação da categoria para poder avançar no processo de voto. Uma lista reduzida com 15 filmes será anunciada em Dezembro.
Os filmes submetidos à categoria de documentário em Longa-Metragem também podem se qualificar para o Oscar em outras categorias, incluindo Melhor Filme, contanto que estejam de acordo com os requerimentos dessas categorias.
Em 2017 o vencedor foi O.J.: Made in America e, após a vitória do filme na categoria de Melhor Documentário, houve uma alteração na regra. Documentários divididos em múltiplos filmes (ou partes/episódios) não serão mais aceitos.
Os cinco indicados finais serão anunciados pela Academia de Artes e Ciências Cinematográficas no dia 23 de Janeiro de 2018.
A 90ª edição do Oscar acontecerá no dia 04 de Março de 2018.
